Video integration with Hub v2 FAQ

SmartThings now provides video capabilities, including live streaming and event-based clips, for improved home security and peace of mind.

What do I need to use video?

The SmartThings app for Android or iOS or Windows, a SmartThings-compatible camera, and the Samsung SmartThings Hub v2. The first-generation Hub (Hub v1) does not support all compatible camera models.

Which cameras are compatible with SmartThings?

The Netgear Arlo Wire-free HD and the following models of Samsung SmartCam are compatible.

D-Link cameras are part of SmartThings Labs and do not officially Work with SmartThings. You can connect the following D-Link models to your SmartThings home, but performance may vary and we will not be able to provide support or assistance: DCS-2132L, DCS-2310L, DCS-2330L, DCS-5222L, and DCS-5029L.

What can I do with SmartThings’ video features?

View live video feeds, monitor your home, and automate event-based notifications and video clip recording. Live video is viewable in the app through Rooms and Things. Clip-based recording is viewable through Smart Home Monitor.

Are video services free?

Live streaming is free.

Customers can currently enjoy a free trial of clip-based recording within Smart Home Monitor. Smart Home Monitor with Video Clips will be transitioning to a premium paid service soon.

Smart Home Monitor with Video Clips as a premium paid service will be available for only $4.99/month.

Stay tuned for more information about this service.

Where are video files stored?

Clips are stored in the cloud.

How long are cloud-stored clips available?

Clips are stored for 30 days before being automatically deleted.

Is there a limit to the size or number of video clips I can store?

Nope!

Really?

Yep!

How long are the clips?

Up to 2 minutes long.

Can I download video clips?

Android users can download video clips recorded through Smart Home Monitor to their phones. Downloaded videos are saved as MP4 files.

iOS support for this feature is coming soon.

How many cameras does Hub v2 support?

A single Samsung SmartThings Hub (Hub v2) can support up to 4 Samsung SmartCam or D-Link cameras or a mix of the two. (Please note again that D-Link cameras are part of SmartThings Labs and do not officially Work with SmartThings.) A single Hub can support up to 15 Netgear Arlo Wire-Free Cameras, depending on your Arlo subscription plan. Netgear Arlo cameras are compatible with both Hub v2 and v1. Note: Within Smart Home Monitor, you can only select up to 10 cameras for event-based clip recording.

Does video constantly stream to the cloud?

No, we only stream to the cloud when you're watching a live stream or recording a clip.

How does SmartThings know when to start recording?

For Samsung SmartCam (and D-Link in SmartThings Labs) cameras, intelligent buffering allows SmartThings to record a clip 10 seconds prior to the start of an event. The Netgear Arlo Wire-Free cameras do not support intelligent buffering and will begin recording at the start of an event. Recording happens only when needed based on customer-defined events, giving you greater security and privacy.

What is the latency like?

While on your home’s local network, latency of streaming video in the app will be very low (0-3 seconds). When you are outside of your home, latency may be 5-10 seconds.
