How to create alerts with Smart Home Monitor

Smart Home Monitor is a unified monitoring solution that provides a central place for alerts about intrusion, smoke and fire, leaks, and other unexpected activity. Smart Home Monitor also sends you notifications whenever there is an incident.

To illustrate how Smart Home Monitor can work for you, these instructions will walk you through an example of how to:

Send a text alert when your home is set to Armed/Away and the front door opens.

First, access Smart Home Monitor through the SmartThings mobile app and create a new Security alert:

  1. Go to the Dashboard
  2. Tap the gear icon
  3. Tap Security

Next, configure your new Security alert’s Armed/Away settings:

Armed/Away is intended for when you’re away and the home is unoccupied. Smart Home Monitor defaults to using every open/closed and motion sensor for monitoring while in Armed/Away, but let’s choose just one sensor for this example.

  1. Tap to toggle Use every open/close and motion sensor
  2. Under Select Sensors, tap Open/closed sensors
  3. Select the button for your front door sensor
  4. Tap Done
  5. Tap Next

Then, configure the Security alert’s Armed/Home settings:

In this example, we only want an alert when you’re away from home. Armed/Home is intended for when you’re at home, so let’s disable alerts for Armed/Home.

  1. Tap to toggle Use every open/close sensor but no motion sensors to the OFF state
  2. Under Select Sensors, tap Open/closed sensors
  3. Deselect the button for your front door sensor
  4. Tap Done
  5. Tap Next

Next, tell Smart Home Monitor to alert you with a text message:

  1. Under Alarm & Notifications, tap Text & Push Notifications
  2. Toggle Send push notifications to off
  3. Tap Phone number?
  4. Enter your phone number
  5. Tap Done
  6. Tap Done again to complete setup

You’re almost done!

With only these settings, you will have to remember to manually put your home in Armed/Away (by tapping the ARM (AWAY) button under the Home view of Smart Home Monitor) in order to get a text alert.

Here’s how to set up a Routine that will automatically trigger Armed/Away when everyone in your family leaves home:

  1. Tap Automations
  2. Under Routines, tap Add a Routine at the bottom of your Routines
  3. Tap “What do you want to do?” to name the Routine (e.g., “Set To Armed/Away”)
  4. Tap Next

Next, indicate which alarm state (Armed/Away, Armed/Home) you want for Smart Home Monitor:

  1. Tap Set Smart Home Monitor to
  2. Select the button for Arm (Away)
  3. You will automatically return to the previous screen

Then, set when you want this Routine to automatically run:

  1. Under Additional settings, tap Automatically perform “Set To Armed/Away Mode”
  2. Tap Everyone leaves
  3. Under All of these people, tap Which?
  4. Select your family’s presence sensor(s)
  5. Tap Done
  6. Configure additional options as desired
  7. Tap Done to complete setup

That’s it!

As you were configuring this Smart Home Monitor Security alert, you may have noticed other, more advanced options. Smart Home Monitor lets you add several restrictions and parameters to totally customise your monitoring solutions.

If you’re ready for the next level of monitoring and security, keep reading to learn how to:

Send a text alert, turn on a siren, and capture video if the front door opens at any time.

First, access Smart Home Monitor to edit your existing alert:

  1. Go to the Dashboard

  3. Tap Security

Next, configure your new Security alert’s Armed/Away settings:

You’ll see that Smart Home Monitor remembered your saved configurations for this Security alert, including selecting the front door open/closed sensor for Armed/Away. Since there is nothing additional to configure at this step for this particular example, tap Next.

Then, configure the Security alert’s Armed/Home settings:

  1. Under Select Sensors, tap Open/closed sensors
  2. Select the button for your front door sensor
  3. Tap Done
  4. Tap Next

  2. Tap Select Sirens
  3. Select the button for your siren
  4. Tap Done
  5. Tap to modify the Alert Duration (optional)
