Set up and connect the SmartThings Motion Sensor

The SmartThings Motion Sensor allows you to protect your home by triggering alerts if there's unexpected motion, keeping you and your family safe. Once the sensor is set up and connected, you can set up Automations to tell the lights to turn on and off as you come and go or set your thermostat based on the motion or temperature readings.

  • SmartThings app
  • SmartThings Classic app

Connect the SmartThings Motion Sensor

  1. Bring the Motion Sensor within 15 feet or 4.5 meters of the SmartThings Hub.
  2. Open the SmartThings app on your phone and touch Add Device > Add Device Manually > Motion sensor > SmartThings IM6001-MTP01.
  3. Remove the battery tab on the sensor marked REMOVE WHEN CONNECTING.
  4. From the SmartThings app, touch Next and scan the code on the back of the device.
  5. The SmartThings Hub will begin searching for your device. Once it is discovered, you can rename the device and touch Save > Done.
  6. Place the Motion Sensor on a table or shelf, or use the included adhesive or magnetic mounting bracket to affix it to a wall or metal surface.

 

Reset the SmartThings Motion Sensor

  1. Using a paper clip or a small tool, hold down the recessed Connect button on the back of the Motion Sensor for 5 seconds. Release the button when the LED light on the front starts blinking red.
  2. Once the sensor has been reset, the LED will begin to blink green and red, indicating that the sensor is attempting to connect.
  3. Use the SmartThings app and steps detailed above to reconnect your Motion Sensor.

 

Requires a SmartThings Hub or compatible device with SmartThings Hub functionality.

How to connect the SmartThings Motion Sensor in the SmartThings Classic app

In the SmartThings Classic mobile app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
  3. The app will say Looking for devices…
  4. While the Hub searches, move the Motion Sensor within 15 feet of the Hub and pull the battery tab on the sensor
  5. When the device is discovered, it will be listed at the top of the screen
  6. Tap the device to rename it and tap Done
  7. When finished, tap Save
  8. Tap Ok to confirm

 

How to reset the SmartThings Motion Sensor

If the SmartThings Motion Sensor didn't connect to the Hub when you removed the pull-tab, reset and connect the device manually.

If you're unsure about which version of the SmartThings Motion Sensor you own, click here.

First, move the Motion Sensor within 15 feet of Hub and remove the sensor’s cover by pulling it away from the back panel. Then, in the SmartThings Classic app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
  3. The app will say Looking for devices…

Next, reset the sensor:

  1. Hold down the Connect button on the Motion Sensor for 5 seconds
  2. Release the button when the LED light starts blinking red
  3. Once the sensor has been reset, the LED will begin to blink green/red OR double blink blue, indicating that the sensor is attempting to connect

Then, back in the SmartThings Classic app:

  1. The Hub should automatically discover your device within a couple of minutes
  2. Once the app shows a device has been found, follow the in-app steps to name and save the device

 

How to remove the Motion Sensor from the SmartThings Hub

If the Motion Sensor is not performing as expected, you may need to reset the device and/or remove and reconnect the device with the SmartThings Hub.

To remove the device via the SmartThings Classic app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Tap Things
  3. Select the Motion Sensor
  4. Tap the gear icon
  5. Tap Remove
  6. Confirm removal (this cannot be undone)
