Set up and connect the SmartThings Water Leak Sensor

The SmartThings Water Leak Sensor can catch leaks right away and help save your home from water damage. Receive an immediate alert on your phone at the first sign of a leak with Smart Home Monitor.

  • SmartThings app
  • SmartThings Classic app

Connect the SmartThings Water Leak Sensor

  1. Bring the Water Leak Sensor within 15 feet or 4.5 meters of the SmartThings Hub.
  2. Open the SmartThings app on your phone and touch Add Device > Add Device Manually > Water leak sensor > SmartThings IM6001-WLP01.
  3. Remove the battery tab on the sensor marked REMOVE WHEN CONNECTING.
  4. From the SmartThings app, touch Next and scan the code on the back of the device.
  5. The SmartThings Hub will begin searching for your device. Once it is discovered, you can rename the device and touch Save > Done.
  6. Place the Water Leak Sensor under a sink, next to a water heater, or other areas of your home where you want to monitor for leaks.

 

Reset the SmartThings Water Leak Sensor

  1. Press and hold down the Connect button of the Water Leak for 5 seconds. Release the button when the LED light on the front starts blinking red.
    Note: The Connect button is a small raised dot found centered above the code on the bottom of the Water Leak Sensor.
  2. Once the sensor has been reset, the LED will begin to blink green and red, indicating that the sensor is attempting to connect.
  3. Use the SmartThings app and steps detailed above to reconnect your Water Leak Sensor.

 

Requires a SmartThings Hub or compatible device with SmartThings Hub functionality.

How to connect the SmartThings Water Leak Sensor in the SmartThings Classic app

Note: In order to use the SmartThings app to control the SmartThings Motion Sensor, a SmartThings Hub or compatible device that Works as a SmartThings Hub is required.

In the SmartThings Classic mobile app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
  3. The app will say Looking for devices…
  4. While the Hub searches, move the Water Leak Sensor within 15 feet of the Hub and pull the battery tab on the sensor
  5. When the device is discovered, it will be listed at the top of the screen
  6. Tap the device to rename it and tap Done
  7. When finished, tap Save
  8. Tap Ok to confirm

 

How to reset the SmartThings Water Leak Sensor

If the SmartThings Water Leak Sensor didn't connect to the Hub when you removed the pull-tab, reset and connect the device manually.

If you're unsure about which version of the SmartThings Water Leak Sensor you own, click here.

First, move the Water Leak Sensor within 15 feet of the Hub. Then, in the SmartThings Classic app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
  3. The app will say Looking for devices…

Next, reset the sensor:

  1. Hold down the Connect button on the Water Leak Sensor for 5 seconds. (If you're unable to locate the Connect button, find your model here)
  2. Release the button when the LED light starts blinking red
  3. Once the sensor has been reset, the LED will begin to blink green/red, indicating that the sensor is attempting to connect

Then, back in the SmartThings Classic app:

  1. The Hub should automatically discover your device within a couple of minutes
  2. Once the app shows a device has been found, follow the in-app steps to name and save the device

 

How to remove the Water Leak Sensor from the SmartThings Hub

If the Water Leak Sensor is not performing as expected, you may need to reset the device and/or remove and reconnect the device with the SmartThings Hub.

To remove the device via the SmartThings Classic app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Tap Things
  3. Select the Water Leak Sensor
  4. Tap the gear icon
  5. Tap Remove
  6. Confirm removal (this cannot be undone)
