Why is there a new SmartThings app?

To help you get the most out of your smart home, we’re working to connect products and services from Samsung with the vast ecosystem of devices that work with SmartThings. The original SmartThings app has been renamed SmartThings Classic. We are working to seamlessly transition our existing users over to the new SmartThings application. In the meantime, we encourage you to stay on SmartThings Classic until we notify you that you are ready to transfer over. SmartThings Classic will eventually be retired.

 

How is the new SmartThings app different than SmartThings Classic?

As we bring together the Samsung and SmartThings IoT services, we are ensuring that all of the features you love are available in our new mobile app. In the interim, we have renamed the app you currently use to SmartThings Classic. There is no immediate impact and users will be notified when they’re ready to transition to the new ‘SmartThings’ app.

 

How long will there be two apps?

We do not have a specific sunset date for SmartThings Classic, but it will not happen until the new SmartThings app can support you, our existing customers. We will let you know ahead of time before SmartThings Classic is no longer supported.

 

Will I have to switch to the new app?

At this time, you do not need to do anything. We will be sending you communications as necessary to help you with the transition process.

 

Will the same Works With SmartThings devices work with the new app?

We are working to ensure your favourite Works With SmartThings devices will have similar (and sometimes more) features in the new app.

 

I just purchased a SmartThings Hub. Which app do I use?

New SmartThings Hub owners will be able to use either application.

  • New ADT customers should use the SmartThings Classic application. We are still working to ensure ADT features are fully supported in the new SmartThings app.
  • Samsung Connect Home customers should use the new SmartThings application.

 

Will the new app be available on iOS and Android?

The new SmartThings application will be available on both iOS and Android, and offer similar feature sets.

 

Can I transfer my setup from SmartThings Classic to the new app?

Yes. We want your transition to be as seamless as possible. We will let you know when transition tools are ready. Stay tuned!

 

Why can't I log in to the new SmartThings app?

The new app uses the Samsung login system. If you hold a SmartThings account, you will soon receive an Account Update banner in the SmartThings Classic app to walk you through updating your SmartThings account to a Samsung account.

 

What do I need to do to prepare for the new app?

For now, you do not need to do anything. Use the SmartThings Classic app as usual. We will let you know when your features are ready to be transitioned to the new SmartThings app.
