How to connect Wi-Fi devices

SmartThings works with many third-party Wi-Fi devices, and some of them connect to the SmartThings Hub over the Local Area Network (LAN) and others connect to the SmartThings cloud through the third-party's cloud (cloud-to-cloud). Visit our Work with SmartThings page to see if your device is officially supported by SmartThings.

To connect devices with automatic LAN discovery

To make the connection process simpler, the SmartThings Hub has the ability to automatically scan your network for certain devices that connect with SmartThings over LAN.

The devices supported by automatic LAN discovery include:

To connect devices with automatic LAN discovery

First, these devices need to be connected to your network using the device's native app, e.g., the Samsung Multiroom app or the Philips Hue app. The SmartThings Hub must also be on that same network in order to discover your devices.

Then, in the SmartThings mobile app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
  3. The app will say Looking for devices…
  4. The Hub should automatically discover devices on your network
    • When a Hue Bridge is discovered, the app will prompt you to press the button on the Hue Bridge to link it with the SmartThings Hub. SmartThings will then automatically discover all of your Hue lights connected to that Hue Bridge
  5. When the device is discovered, it will be listed at the top of the screen
  6. Tap the device to rename it and tap Done
  7. When finished, tap Save
  8. Tap Ok to confirm your paired devices

To connect devices manually

All other supported LAN devices (such as the Samsung SmartCam HD and the Samsung TV device) and cloud-to-cloud devices must be connected manually through the SmartThings app. Visit our Work with SmartThings page to see if your device is officially supported by SmartThings.

To connect devices manually

First, cloud-to-cloud devices need to be set up through the device's native app (e.g., the Arlo or ecobee apps), and LAN devices need to be connected to the same network as the Hub in order for SmartThings to discover them.

Note: While the Logitech Harmony Hub is a cloud-to-cloud integration, it also needs to be on the same network as the Hub. Additionally, for optimal performance from your Samsung TV, connect it to your network using an Ethernet cable.

Then, in the SmartThings app, find your specific third-party device and follow the in-app instructions to connect:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
  3. Tap Add device manually
  4. Tap a device category (e.g., from Light Bulbs, Locks, Outlets, Thermostats, etc.) to see a list of related devices that work with SmartThings
  5. Select your device
  6. Tap Connect Now
  7. Follow the in-app prompts to complete setup

OR:

  1. Tap Marketplace
  2. Under Things, tap a device category (e.g., from Light Bulbs, Locks, Outlets, Thermostats, etc.) to see a list of related devices that work with SmartThings
  3. Select your device
  4. Tap Connect Now
  5. Follow the in-app prompts to complete setup
