How to add a SmartThings Hub in the SmartThings app

If you have SmartThings Wifi, you can find the setup steps here. If you're unsure of which version of the SmartThings Hub you have, click here.

Adding a SmartThings Hub to your SmartThings app will allow you to connect to supported devices and the many third-party integrations that work with SmartThings.

Note: It is not recommended to add a SmartThings Hub (2018) to a Location with an existing Hub. Read below to add a Hub after creating a new Location in the SmartThings app. 

 

  • SmartThings Hub (2018)
  • SmartThings Hub v2 (2015)

Set up a SmartThings Hub

In the SmartThings app:

  1. From the Dashboard, tap Add device
  2. Tap Add Device Manually
  3. Tap Wi-Fi/Hub
  4. Select SmartThings Hub IM6001-V3
  5. Select how you'd like to connect your Hub by tapping Wi-Fi or Ethernet
  6. Follow the in-app instructions to connect your Hub, which are reproduced here:
    1. Connect your Hub using the included power cable and, if necessary, network cable
    2. Don't unplug the Hub during the setup process. Setup will take 5-10 minutes to complete
  7. Tap Next
  8. Using your mobile device's camera, scan the QR code located on the back of the Hub
    • If necessary, tap OK to give SmartThings access to your camera
    • If you're having trouble scanning the QR code, tap Add device by serial number and enter the code manually
  9. Tap Next
  10. If you are setting up the Hub via Wi-Fi:
    1. Select your Wi-Fi network
    2. Enter your Wi-Fi network's password, then tap Connect
  11. Wait a few moments while your Hub is connected
  12. Tap Tap here to set a location to set a geolocation for your Hub
    1. Hold and drag the pin to your location, or enter your address manually
    2. Pinch and zoom the circle to set the size of the geolocation
    3. Tap Done
  13. When the Hub is successfully added, tap Done

 

If you have not already created a Location, adding a SmartThings Hub will automatically create a Location (with the default name Home), which is the main launch pad for your connected Hub, devices, and Scenes.

 

Add a SmartThings Hub to an existing Location

In the SmartThings app:

  1. From the home screen, tap Devices
  2. Tap the Location drop-down menu at the top of the screen
  3. Tap the name of your Location
  4. Tap Add device
    • For iOS, tap the plus icon
  5. Tap Add Device Manually
  6. Tap Wi-Fi/Hub
  7. Select the SmartThings Hub IM6001-V3
  8. Agree to the SmartThings Privacy Policy
  9. Select how you'd like to connect your Hub by tapping Wi-Fi or Ethernet
  10. Follow the in-app instructions to connect your Hub, which are reproduced here:
    1. Connect your Hub using the included power cable and, if necessary, network cable
    2. Don't unplug the Hub during the setup process. Setup will take 5-10 minutes to complete
  11. Tap Next

  14. If you are setting up the Hub via Wi-Fi:

  17. When the Hub is successfully added, tap Done

View a SmartThings Hub

  1. Tap Devices
  2. Tap the Location drop-down menu at the top of the screen
  3. Select All devices
  4. Tap on the Hub

OR

  1. From the Dashboard, tap the name of the Location in the sliding carousel
  2. Tap your SmartThings Hub under the device list for your Location

Note: You can access the Hub at any time from the Dashboard by adding a shortcut.

 

Delete a SmartThings Hub

NOTE: Deleting a SmartThings Hub means all devices connected to your Hub will have to be reset or excluded before they can be reconnected. All Automations and Scenes associated with that Hub will be lost, as well. However, the Hub will need to be factory reset before it can be claimed again.Click here to learn how to factory reset your SmartThings Hub.

  1. Tap Devices
  2. Tap the Location drop-down menu at the top of the screen
  3. Tap on the name of your Location
  4. Tap the three dots in the top right
  5. Tap Edit
  6. Select the red minus icon next to the SmartThings Hub
  7. Tap Delete to confirm (this cannot be undone)

 

Set up a SmartThings Hub v2 (2015)

In the SmartThings app:

  1. From the Dashboard, tap Add device
  2. For Android, tap Add Device Manually
  3. Tap Wi-Fi/Hub
  4. Select SmartThings Hub STH-ETH-2 / STH-ETH-1
  5. Agree to the SmartThings Privacy Policy and tap Next
  6. Follow the in-app instructions to connect your Hub, which are reproduced here:
    1. Connect your Hub using the included power and network cables.
    2. Don't unplug the Hub during the setup process. Setup will take 5-10 minutes to complete.
  7. Tap Next
  8. Enter the 6-character Welcome code that was packaged with the Hub
  9. Tap Next
  10. When the Hub is successfully added, tap Done

    2. Don't unplug the Hub during the setup process. Setup will take 5-10 minutes to complete.
  10. Tap Next
  11. Enter the 6-character Welcome code that was packaged with the Hub
  12. Tap Next
  13. When the Hub is successfully added, tap Done

View a SmartThings Hub

  1. Tap Devices

  4. Tap on the Hub

OR

  3. Tap on the name of your Location
  4. Tap the three dots in the top right
  5. Tap Edit
