Connecting ADT devices with code-based pairing

ADT devices require a two-factor authentication to connect. First, both the ADT device and ADT Security Hub must be in pairing mode; and second, the QR code that came with the ADT device must be scanned in the SmartThings Classic app.

Other kinds of smart devices (e.g., ZigBee or Z-Wave) that work with SmartThings do not require code-based pairing. You can find steps to connect your other devices here.

The following ADT devices use code-based pairing:

  • ADT Motion Detector
  • ADT Door and Window Detector
  • ADT Smoke Alarm
  • ADT Carbon Monoxide Alarm
  • ADT Keychain Remote

  • SmartThings app
  • SmartThings Classic app

Connect ADT devices in the SmartThings app

  1. From the Dashboard, tap Add device
  2. Android: Tap Add Device Manually
  3. Select ADT security device
  4. Tap on the device that you're attempting to connect
  5. If you have more than one SmartThings Hub connected, select the Hub you would like to add the device to, then tap Done
  6. The Hub will begin looking for devices on the Install Code screen
  7. Scan the QR code on the front or back of the device
    • If scanning the QR code didn’t work, enter the 16-digit Installation code manually
  8. Remove the battery tab from the ADT device
    • If the battery tab has already been removed or the device’s LED isn’t blinking, find the steps to put your specific device into pairing mode here
  9. When the device is discovered, a message will appear that the device was successfully connected to your SmartThings Hub
