How to connect Philips Hue devices

Note: SmartThings’ Philips Hue integration requires use of the Philips Hue Ethernet Bridge. Connecting directly to Philips Hue lights is not currently supported. The Hue Bridge must be updated to firmware version 01016441 or later. To force your Hue Bridge to update its firmware: Close the Hue mobile app, unplug the Bridge for 10 seconds, plug it back in, and then restart the Hue app.

To connect a Philips Hue device with SmartThings

First, set up your Philips Hue Bridge through the Philips Hue iOS or Android app.

Second, in the SmartThings mobile app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
  3. The app will say Looking for devices…
  4. Wait a moment for the Hub to automatically discover your Hue Bridge. Then, as prompted, press the button on the Hue Bridge to link it with the SmartThings Hub
  5. SmartThings will then automatically discover all of your Hue lights connected to that Hue Bridge. When each device is discovered, it will be listed at the top of the screen
  6. Tap a device to rename it and tap Done
  7. When finished, tap Save
  8. Tap Ok to confirm

Note: Your Philips Hue devices and the SmartThings Hub will have to be on the same local network in order to work together.


To use and configure Philips Hue devices within SmartThings

Each light will show up as its own device within the Things view of the SmartThings mobile app. To access and manually control your Philips Hue devices:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Tap Things
  3. Tap the device


You can also automate your Hue bulbs with Smart Lighting. To install Smart Lighting:

  1. Tap Marketplace
  2. Tap SmartApps
  3. Tap SmartThings Recommends
  4. Tap Smart Lights


To remove Philips Hue devices from SmartThings

If a Hue device is connected but not operating as normal, you may need to remove the device and reconnect it with the SmartThings Hub.

To remove the device via the SmartThings app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Tap Things
  3. Select the device
  4. Tap the gear icon
  5. Tap Edit Device
  6. Tap Remove
  7. Confirm removal (this cannot be undone)
