How to connect Philips Hue devices

Note: SmartThings’ Philips Hue integration requires the use of the Philips Hue Ethernet Bridge. Connecting directly to Philips Hue lights is not currently supported. The Hue Bridge must be updated to firmware version 01016441 or later. To force your Hue Bridge to update its firmware: Close the Hue mobile app, unplug the Bridge for 10 seconds, plug it back in, and then restart the Hue app.

To see which Hue devices are supported, in the SmartThings app:

  1. From the Home screen, touch Menu (Menu icon)
  2. Touch Supported devices
  3. Touch Philips Hue

Connect a Philips Hue device in the SmartThings app

  • Philips Hue with SmartThings Hub
  • Philips Hue without SmartThings Hub

If you have a SmartThings Hub, we recommend using these steps below to connect Philips Hue to SmartThings. Connecting Philips Hue using the SmartThings Hub will create a connection using your Local Area Network and will enable Philips Hue to use local processing with SmartThings. Click here to learn more about local processing.

To connect Philips Hue to SmartThings, set up your Philips Hue Bridge through the Philips Hue iOS or Android app first.

Second, in the SmartThings mobile app:

  1. From the Home screen, touch the Plus (+) icon and select Add device
  2. Select Philips Hue
  3. Touch Lighting and select Philips Hue with SmartThings Hub
  4. Choose a Location and Room for the device and touch Next
  5. The app will say Searching for devices…
  6. Wait a moment for the Hub to automatically discover your Hue Bridge. Then, as prompted, press the button on the Hue Bridge to link it with the SmartThings Hub
  7. SmartThings will then automatically discover all of your Hue lights connected to that Hue Bridge. When each device is discovered, it will be listed on the screen

Note: Your Philips Hue devices and the SmartThings Hub will have to be on the same local network in order to work together.

If you do not have a SmartThings Hub, we recommend using these steps below to connect Philips Hue to SmartThings. This method will authorize SmartThings to access and control your Philips Hue devices from the SmartThings app.

Note: This integration does not currently support local processing. Additionally, controlling Hue devices directly through the Philips Hue app will not automatically update those device states in the SmartThings app. If your device status is not updating, please wait up to 6 hours and check again.
