How to change the battery in the SmartSense Presence Sensor and Samsung SmartThings Arrival Sensor

The SmartSense Presence Sensor and the Samsung SmartThings Arrival Sensor require a CR2032 coin cell battery. Follow these steps if your sensor's battery needs to be replaced.

Removing the battery (Gen 1):

  1. Remove the rubber ring.
  2. Using a small flathead screwdriver, push in the tab on the bottom of the Presence tag. The plastic case should pop open.
  3. Remove the circuit board from the case.
  4. Hold the circuit board steady with one hand while sliding the flathead screwdriver underneath the battery until it pops out. Check out the video below for a look at how it's done.

Removing the battery (Gen 2, Samsung SmartThings Arrival Sensor):

  1. Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the groove at the base of the Presence tag.
  2. Gently twist the screwdriver. The plastic case should pop open.
  3. Remove the circuit board from the case.
  4. Hold the circuit board steady with one hand while sliding the flathead screwdriver underneath the battery until it pops out. Watch the video below for a demonstration.

Replacing the battery:

  1. Slide the battery under the metal clamp and gently snap it into place.
  2. Place the circuit board back into the case, lining up the battery with the circular indent.
  3. Snap the case back together. If you have a Gen 1 Presence Sensor, also replace the rubber ring.
