How to connect and reset a Z-Wave Kwikset lock

These instructions apply to the following Z-Wave locks:

Note: The above Kwikset locks are also available in ZigBee models. Consult the documentation that came with your lock if you’re unsure which communication protocol it uses (ZigBee or Z-Wave).

If needed, follow these instructions for how to connect a ZigBee Kwikset lock.

 

  • SmartThings app
  • SmartThings Classic app

Connect a Z-Wave Kwikset lock in the SmartThings app

Note: Z-Wave Kwikset locks are supported in the US.

Tip: Place the lock within 10-15 feet of the SmartThings Hub during initial pairing.

In the SmartThings mobile app:

  1. From the Dashboard, tap Add device
  2. Android: Tap Add Device Manually
  3. Select Lock
  4. Tap Kwikset
  5. If you have more than one SmartThings Hub connected, select the Location you would like to add the device to, then tap Done
  6. While the Hub searches, press button “A” on the back panel of the lock interior once
  7. When the device is discovered, a message will appear that the device was successfully connected to your SmartThings Hub
  8. Tap Edit to rename the device
  9. When finished, tap Done
  10. Tap Done again to confirm

 

To reset a Z-Wave Kwikset lock

If the Z-Wave Kwikset lock was not discovered, or if it was previously connected with another controller, you may need to reset, or “exclude,” the device before it can successfully connect with the SmartThings Hub. To do this, in the SmartThings mobile app:

  1. From the Dashboard, tap on the Devices tab
  2. Tap the Hub
  3. Tap the three dots in the top right
  4. Tap Z-Wave exclusion
  5. When prompted, press button “A” on the back panel of the lock interior once

After the app indicates that the device was successfully removed from SmartThings, follow the first set of instructions above to connect the Z-Wave Kwikset lock.

 

To remove a Z-Wave Kwikset lock from SmartThings

If the lock is connected but not operating as normal, you may need to remove the device and reconnect it with the SmartThings Hub.

To remove the device via the SmartThings app:

  1. From the Dashboard, tap on the Devices tab
  2. Tap the three dots in the top right
  3. Tap Edit
  4. Tap the red minus icon (-) next to the name of the device
  5. Confirm removal (this cannot be undone)
  6. When prompted, perform the exclusion procedure to remove the device from the mobile app and from the SmartThings Hub

To connect a Z-Wave Kwikset lock in the SmartThings Classic app

Tip: Place the lock within 10-15 feet of the SmartThings Hub during initial pairing.

In the SmartThings Classic mobile app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
  3. The app will say Looking for devices…
  4. While the Hub searches, press button “A” on the back panel of the lock interior once
  5. When the device is discovered, it will be listed at the top of the screen
  6. Tap the device to rename it and tap Done
  7. When finished, tap Save
  8. Tap Ok to confirm

 

To reset a Z-Wave Kwikset lock

If the Z-Wave Kwikset lock was not discovered, or if it was previously connected with another controller, you may need to reset, or “exclude,” the device before it can successfully connect with the SmartThings Hub. To do this in the SmartThings Classic mobile app:

  1. Tap the menu (Android) / More (iOS)
  2. Tap the Hub
  3. Tap Z-Wave Utilities
  4. Tap General Device Exclusion
  5. When prompted, press button “A” on the back panel of the lock interior once

After the app indicates that the device was successfully removed from SmartThings, follow the first set of instructions above to connect the Z-Wave Kwikset lock.

 

To remove a Z-Wave Kwikset lock from SmartThings Classic

If the lock is connected but not operating as normal, you may need to remove the device and reconnect it with the SmartThings Hub.

To remove the device via the SmartThings Classic app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Tap Things
  3. Select the device
  4. Tap the gear icon
  5. Tap Remove
  6. Confirm removal
  7. When prompted, perform the exclusion procedure to remove the device from the mobile app and from the SmartThings Hub
