Aeotec Key Fob

As simple as the SmartThings app is to use, there may be times when you want to only press a single button to control an appliance. Or you might want a convenient way to use SmartThings when you can't get to your smartphone.

The Aeotec Key Fob is a Z-Wave device that allows multiple ways to remotely control your SmartThings—all by pushing a button, or four! Associate your buttons with actions using the "Button Controller" SmartApp. You can program up to eight different scenes by utilizing short and long presses.

To connect the Aeotec Key Fob with the SmartThings Hub

  4. While the Hub searches, press the Learn button on the fob (using the provided button pin or a paperclip) or press the bottom right action button
    • The device’s light will pulse and then stay lit for 2 seconds when it joins with the Hub
  5. When the device is discovered, it will be listed at the top of the screen

To reset the Aeotec Key Fob

If the Aeotec Key Fob was not discovered, you may need to reset, or “exclude,” the device before it can successfully connect with the SmartThings Hub.

First, you may need to exit Use Mode and enter Setup Mode on the Key Fob. To switch from one Mode to the other:

  1. Press and hold the Mode and Learn buttons (with the provided button pin or two paperclips) for 3 seconds
    • The device’s light will illuminate red for 3 seconds, then green for 1 second to confirm the mode has been successfully changed

If you are unsure what Mode your Key Fob is in, you can also factory reset the Key Fob, which should cause the Key Fob to enter Setup Mode:

  1. Press and hold the Mode button for 20 seconds (with the provided button pin or a paperclip)
    • The green and red light will alternate for 20 seconds, then the green light will stay solid for 2 seconds to indicate a successful reset

Then, in the SmartThings mobile app:

  1. Tap the menu (Android) / More (iOS)
  2. Tap the Hub
  3. Tap Z-Wave Utilities
  4. Tap General Device Exclusion
  5. When prompted, press the Learn button on the fob (using the provided button pin or a paper clip) or press the bottom right action button

After the app indicates that the device was successfully removed from SmartThings, follow the first set of instructions above to connect the Aeotec Key Fob.
