How to connect Aeotec micro switches and dimmers

The Aeotec Micro Switches and Dimmers are Z-Wave appliance modules that can be used to control compatible in-wall lighting installations. When Aeotec says "Micro," they mean it. These small devices fit behind most light switches. Acting as repeaters for your Z-Wave network, these Aeotec devices provide seamless home automation completely behind the scenes.

These Aeotec Micro Switches and Dimmers are powered from your main supply and require a neutral wire for connection.

This article will tell you how to connect the following Aeotec Micro Switches and Dimmers with the SmartThings Hub:

To connect the Aeotec Micro device in the SmartThings app

 

1. Install the appliance module

Follow the manufacturer’s instruction manual.

IMPORTANT: A licensed electrician with knowledge and understanding of electrical systems and electrical safety should complete the electrical installation inside the main circuit box (usually located outside of your house).

 

2. Connect the module with your Z-Wave network

In the SmartThings app:

  1. From the Home screen, touch the Plus (+) icon and select Add device
  2. Select Aeotec and touch Switch/dimmer
  3. Choose a Hub for the device and touch Next
  4. Choose a Room for the device and touch Next
  5. While the Hub searches, press the "Action" button once

 

To reset the Aeotec Micro device

If the device was not detected, you may need to reset, or “exclude,” the device before it can successfully connect with the SmartThings Hub. To do this in the SmartThings app:

  1. From the Home screen, touch the menu (Menu icon), and select Devices
  2. Touch the Hub and select More Options (More Options menu icon)
  3. Touch Z-Wave exclusion
  4. Press the "Action" button once

When the app indicates that the device was successfully removed from SmartThings, follow the instructions above to connect the device.

 

To connect the Aeotec Micro device in the SmartThings Classic app

 

1. Install the appliance module

Follow the manufacturer’s instruction manual.

IMPORTANT: A licensed electrician with knowledge and understanding of electrical systems and electrical safety should complete the electrical installation inside the main circuit box (usually located outside of your house).

 

2. Connect the module with your Z-Wave network

In the SmartThings Classic mobile app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
  3. The app will say Looking for devices…
  4. While the Hub searches, initiate pairing via the module with one of the following methods:
    • If the module is powered in a 3-wire system, toggle the external switch/button
    • If the module was not put into an in-wall box, push the internal button on the device once
  5. When the device is discovered, it will be listed at the top of the screen
  6. Tap the device to rename it and tap Done
  7. When finished, tap Save
  8. Tap Ok to confirm

 

To reset the Aeotec Micro device

If the Micro device was not discovered, you may need to reset, or “exclude,” the device before it can successfully connect with the SmartThings Hub. To do this in the SmartThings Classic mobile app:

  1. Tap the menu (Android) / More (iOS)
  2. Tap the Hub
  3. Tap Z-Wave Utilities
  4. Tap General Device Exclusion
  5. When prompted, initiate removal via the module with one of the following methods:
    • If the module is powered in a 3-wire system, toggle the external switch/button 10 times in quick succession
    • If the module was not put into an in-wall box, push the internal button on the device once

After the app indicates that the device was successfully removed from SmartThings, follow the first set of instructions above to connect the Micro device.
