This article tells you how to connect the following GE Z-Wave and Z-Wave Plus switches and dimmers to the SmartThings Hub. For more information about compatibility, detailed product information, and technical specifications, visit our Works With SmartThings page here.

To connect the GE Z-Wave device

In the SmartThings mobile app:

  1. From the Home screen, touch the Plus (+) icon and select Device
  2. Select GE and touch Outlet or Switch/dimmer, then select GE Z-Wave
  3. Touch Start
  4. Choose a Hub for the device
  5. Choose a Room for the device and touch Next
  6. While the Hub searches:
    • For outlets and direct-wire modules, press the connect button once
    • For switches or dimmers, press up on the switch once

To reset the GE Z-Wave device

If the GE device was not discovered, you may need to reset, or “exclude,” the device before it can successfully connect with the SmartThings Hub. To do this in the SmartThings mobile app:

  1. From the Home screen, touch Menu (Menu icon), and select Devices
  2. Touch the Hub and select More Options (More Options menu icon)
  3. Touch Z-Wave utilities and select Z-Wave exclusion
  4. When prompted:
    • For outlets and direct-wire modules, press the connect button once
    • For switches or dimmers, press up on the switch once

After the app indicates that the device was successfully removed from SmartThings, follow the first set of instructions above to connect the GE device.

Troubleshooting a GE device

If you're running into trouble connecting your GE device with the SmartThings Hub, check the following:

  • Device: While the Hub is searching, turn the device on and off (for toggle, press up and down; for paddle, press top and bottom; for outlets, press the button twice). Pressing the switch is like the device raising its hand so the Hub knows what to include/exclude. Sometimes the device can be better detected with multiple “hand raises.”
  • Range: The device may be too far away. Try to be close to the Hub when initially connecting the device (within 15 feet).
  • Air Gap Switch: GE in-wall devices have a small switch called an “air gap switch,” which will cut power to the device if it's pulled out. The air gap switch is located right below the main switch itself, often next to the LED. Make sure the air gap switch is completely pushed in and not pulled out when trying to connect your device.
