SmartApps

After connecting a device with SmartThings, you will want to tell it what to do and when—with SmartThings SmartApps. SmartApps are the customizable automations and rules that control your connected devices.

The SmartApps screen shows all SmartApps you have installed and configured for devices at a single Location.

Types of SmartApps and what they do

Do you want your lights to automatically turn on when motion is detected? Or do you want to be notified when your child comes home from school? Maybe you’d like your fan to adjust according to the day’s weather? You can do all this and more by installing SmartApps.

The SmartThings Marketplace has the following categories of SmartApps:

  • SmartThings Recommends: Here you will find SmartThings’ featured SmartApps, like Smart Lights and Smart Home Monitor. Smart Lights conveniently groups your automations for lights and switches within a single SmartApp, whether you have one or one hundred. Smart Home Monitor is a comprehensive monitoring solution for your home.
  • Samsung Home: Samsung Home helps you connect Samsung Digital Appliances, like washers and dryers, refrigerators, robot vacuums, air conditioners, and more (depending on region).
  • Safety & Security: This category includes SmartApps for securing your home and letting you know when there’s unexpected activity. You will find options for customizing your alarms, locks, and notifications, like Notify Me When and Enhanced Auto Door Lock.
  • Lights & Switches: In addition to Smart Lights, Lights & Switches has SmartApps to control the color, brightness, and behavior of your lights. For example, Gentle Wake Up gradually brightens your bedroom lights in the morning for a soothing, natural wakeup.
  • Climate Control: Go here for smart ways to use your temperature sensors and thermostats. Use Virtual Thermostat to adjust a space heater or window AC when the temperature changes, or try Keep Me Cozy II to change thermostat settings according to Mode.
  • Health & Fitness: Need a little help getting ready for bed or waking up? Sleepy Timer or Comfort Sleep can help your smart home set the lights or temperature for your night time preferences.
  • Elder Care: SmartApps can help you keep an eye on senior loved ones, from anywhere. Daily Routine notifies you if a loved one is not up and moving about by a specified time, for example.
  • Energy Management: These SmartApps make it easy to turn your smart home into a green home. Use Energy Alerts to get notified if you’re using too much energy. Or try Energy Saver to turn off devices and conserve energy.
  • Presence & Modes: Perfect for multi-person households, these SmartApps control select devices and activate Routines depending on who’s home. Working From Home and Routine Director are two great options for presence-based smart home automation.
  • Music & Sounds: After connecting your speakers with SmartThings, go here. The Speaker Companion SmartApp will play or pause your music with various triggers, and more!
  • Social: Know when family members arrive or leave home by connecting your Life360 or SquareHub account with SmartThings. These SmartApps can also automate devices to react to your family’s comings and goings.
  • My Apps: If you developed your own SmartApp and published it through the SmartThings IDE, your app will be in this category. Go here for more information about publishing your SmartApp.
  • More: There are all sorts of neat SmartApps that defy categorization. Check out these solutions for making coffee, feeding your pet, checking your mail, watering your plants, and more.
