Setting up an account, the Hub, and Things

This guide will show you how to:

  • Sign up for SmartThings with a Samsung account
  • Set up the Hub
  • Create a Location
  • Connect your Things

 

If you have the Samsung Connect Home, click here.

Sign up for SmartThings in the SmartThings app

First, get the free SmartThings mobile app for Android or iOS.

After downloading and installing the SmartThings app on your smartphone:

  1. Open the SmartThings app
  2. Tap Sign In
  3. Tap Create account
  4. Tap Agree for the Samsung Terms and Conditions, Terms of Services, and Samsung Privacy Policy
  5. Enter your email address
  6. Enter your password (at least eight characters containing at least one number and one letter)
  7. Confirm your password
  8. Enter your first and last name
  9. Enter your ZIP code and date of birth
  10. Tap Next
  11. Tap Done
  12. Select your country
  13. Tap Continue

 

Create a Location

To create a new Location:

  1. Tap on the Devices tab
  2. Tap the Location drop-down menu at the top of the screen
  3. Tap Add location
  4. Name your new Location
  5. Tap Geolocation and drag the pin to set your physical location
  6. Tap Save

Next, add your SmartThings Hub to your Location.

 

Set up the Hub

  1. From the Dashboard, tap Add device
  2. Android: Tap Add Device Manually
  3. Select Hubs
  4. Tap Samsung SmartThings Hub
  5. Follow the on-screen guide for connecting the Hub
  6. Tap Next
  7. Enter the Welcome Code for your Hub
    • The unique 6-character Welcome Code for the Samsung SmartThings Hub (Hub v2) is packaged with the Hub and located on a card under the Hub's tray in the box
  8. Tap Register your Hub
  9. Wait while the Hub downloads any available firmware upgrades. Do not unplug the Hub during the setup process. When the Hub shows solid green LEDs, tap Continue
  10. Wait for the success message that your Hub has been activated
  11. Tap Done

Your Hub is now connected and up and running, and you’re ready to connect your Things.

 

Connect your Things

  1. From the Dashboard, tap Add device
  2. Android: Tap Add Device Manually
  3. Select the category of your device
  4. Tap the name of the device
  5. While the Hub searches, perform the connection/inclusion process specific to that device
    • Follow the on-screen pairing steps or consult the device's manual for instructions
  6. When the device is discovered, a message will appear that the device was successfully connected to your SmartThings Hub
  7. Tap Edit to rename the device
  8. When finished, tap Done
  9. Tap Done again to confirm

You’re all done! Enjoy your new smart home.

Sign up for SmartThings in the SmartThings Classic app

First, get the free SmartThings mobile app for Android or iOS.

  1. Open the SmartThings app
  2. Tap New to SmartThings
  3. Tap Create account
  4. Tap Agree for the Samsung Terms and Conditions, Terms of Services, and Samsung Privacy Policy
  5. Enter your email address
  6. Enter your password (at least eight characters containing at least one number and one letter)
  7. Confirm your password
  8. Enter your first and last name
  9. Enter your ZIP code and date of birth
  10. Tap Next
  11. Tap Done
  12. Select your country
  13. Tap Continue

 

Set up the Hub

Follow the in-app instructions to connect your Hub, which are reproduced here:

  1. Enter the Welcome Code for your Hub
    • The unique 6-character Welcome Code for the Samsung SmartThings Hub (Hub v2) is packaged with the Hub and located on a card under the Hub's tray in the box
  2. Tap Next
  3. Connect the Hub using the included power and network cables. Wait while the Hub downloads any available firmware upgrades. Do not unplug the Hub during the setup process. When the Hub shows solid green LEDs, tap Continue

You will then be prompted to set up your home (Location).

 

Create a Location

  1. Tap Grant Location Permission
  2. Tap Allow to give the SmartThings app permission to know your mobile device’s GPS coordinates. (By doing so, SmartThings can trigger different actions to happen automatically when you enter and leave your customized Location)
  3. Tap to give your location a name (defaults to “Home”)
  4. Tap This is My Location to confirm your physical location
    1. If needed, tap Change Location
    2. Long press the pin in a new spot on the map, or tap and hold the pin to drag it
    3. Tap and drag the dot to change the size of the geofence surrounding your home
    4. Tap Save
  5. Wait for the success message that your Hub has been activated
  6. Tap Done

Your Hub is now connected and up and running, and you’re ready to connect your Things.

 

Connect your Things

  1. Read the in-app instructions and when finished, tap OK, got it.</strong
  2. The app will display the Things page
  3. Tap Add a Thing
  4. The app will say Looking for devices…
  5. While the Hub searches, perform the connection/inclusion process specific to that device
    • Consult the device's manual for instructions
  6. When the device is discovered, it will be listed at the top of the screen
  7. Tap the device to rename it and tap Done
  8. When finished, tap Save
  9. Tap Ok to confirm

You’re all done! Enjoy your new smart home.
