Setting up an account, the Hub, and Things

The SmartThings Hub connects all of your smart devices with one another, the SmartThings cloud, and the SmartThings mobile app. The newest generation of SmartThings Hub (2018) is also smarter than ever, by giving you the convenience of connecting your Hub using Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Sign up for SmartThings in the SmartThings app

First, get the free SmartThings mobile app for Android or iOS.

After downloading and installing the SmartThings app on your smartphone:

  1. Open the SmartThings app
  2. Touch Sign In
  3. Touch Create account
  4. Touch Agree for the Samsung Terms and Conditions, Terms of Services, and Samsung Privacy Policy
  5. Enter your email address
  6. Enter your password (at least eight characters containing at least one number and one letter)
  7. Confirm your password
  8. Enter your first and last name
  9. Enter your ZIP code and date of birth
  10. Touch Next
  11. Touch Done
  12. Select your country
  13. Touch Continue


Set up a SmartThings Hub

In the SmartThings app:

  1. From the Home screen, touch the Plus (+) icon and select Add device
  2. Touch SmartThings, touch Wi-Fi/Hub, and then SmartThings Hub IM6001-V3
  3. Select how you'd like to connect your Hub by touching Wi-Fi or Ethernet
  4. Follow the in-app instructions to connect your Hub, which are reproduced here:
    1. Connect your Hub using the included power cable and, if necessary, network cable
    2. Don't unplug the Hub during the setup process. Setup will take 5-10 minutes to complete
  5. Touch Next
  6. Using your mobile device's camera, scan the QR code located on the back of the Hub
    • If necessary, touch OK to give SmartThings access to your camera
    • If you're having trouble scanning the QR code, touch Add device by serial number and enter the code manually
  7. Touch Next
  8. If you are setting up the Hub via Wi-Fi:
    1. Select your Wi-Fi network
    2. Enter your Wi-Fi network's password, then touch Connect
  9. Wait a few moments while your Hub is connected
  10. Touch Tap here to set a location to set a geolocation for your Hub
    1. Hold and drag the pin to your location, or enter your address manually
    2. Pinch and zoom the circle to set the size of the geolocation
    3. Touch Done
  11. When the Hub is successfully added, touch Done


If you have not already created a Location, adding a SmartThings Hub will automatically create a Location (with the default name Home), which is the main launch pad for your connected Hub, devices, and Scenes.


Connect your Things

  1. From the Home screen, touch the Plus (+) icon and select Add device
  2. Select the brand and category of your device
  3. Touch the name of the device
  4. While the Hub searches, perform the connection/inclusion process specific to that device
    • Follow the on-screen pairing steps or consult the device's manual for instructions
  5. When the device is discovered, a message will appear that the device was successfully connected to your SmartThings Hub
  6. Touch Edit to rename the device
  7. When finished, touch Done
  8. Touch Done again to confirm


You’re all done! Enjoy your new smart home.
