How to set up the Samsung SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor as a garage door open/closed sensor

NOTE: The following instructions apply only to the Samsung SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor. This is our latest generation of Multipurpose Sensor.

If you have a first-generation sensor, contact support for help enabling the sensor's garage door capability.

When the Samsung SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor is connected with the SmartThings Hub, it can be used as a garage door open/closed sensor.

Selecting the Multipurpose Sensor’s garage door option through the SmartThings mobile app tells the device to use its 3-axis accelerometer to sense the tilt of the garage door, so you can use it without the magnet.

Here is how to set up the Multipurpose Sensor:

Connect the Samsung SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor with the Hub

In the SmartThings mobile app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
  3. The app will say Looking for devices…
  4. While the Hub searches, move the Multipurpose Sensor within 15 feet of the Hub and pull the REMOVE WHEN CONNECTING tab on the sensor
  5. When the device is discovered, it will be listed at the top of the screen
  6. Tap the device to rename it and tap Done
  7. When finished, tap Save
  8. Tap Ok to confirm

If needed, go here for more information about connecting and resetting the Samsung SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor.

Enable the Multipurpose Sensor as a garage door sensor

In the SmartThings mobile app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Tap Things
  3. Tap the connected Multipurpose Sensor
  4. Tap the gear icon
  5. Tap the option that says, "Do you want to use this sensor on a garage door?"
  6. Tap Yes
  7. Tap Done
  8. Tap Done again to save changes

Mount the Multipurpose Sensor on the garage door

Mount the garage door sensor vertically so that when the garage door is vertical, it will read “closed.” When horizontal, it will read “open.”

To mount the Multipurpose Sensor in the correct orientation:

  1. Set aside the smaller magnet portion of the sensor (not needed for sensing garage door status)
  2. Orient the main sensor vertically, with the line to the right
  3. Attach the sensor to the garage door using the included adhesive strips
  4. Test the setup by opening and closing the garage door
