Meet the SmartThings Hub hardware

SmartThings Hub (2018) connects all your smart devices with one another, the SmartThings cloud, and the SmartThings mobile app. The newest generation of the Hub is also smarter than ever, offering greater convenience and reliability for the user.


Here’s a closer look at the Hub:


The Hub requires a wired power connection. If you connect the Hub over Wi-Fi, an Ethernet connection is not required. Plugging the Hub into your wall outlet should be one of the first steps of your SmartThings experience. An internet connection lets the Hub communicate with the SmartThings app, the SmartThings cloud, and supported devices that rely on IP or cloud-to-cloud connections instead of Zigbee or Z-Wave.

The plug adapter input is 100-240V and the output is 5V at 2A.

The newest generation of the SmartThings Hub can be connected to the internet using either Wi-Fi or a hard-wired Ethernet connection.


Communication Protocols

The Hub contains a Zigbee radio (2.4 GHz) and a Z-Wave radio (908.4 MHz). These allow the Hub to communicate with your Zigbee and Z-Wave devices. The SmartThings Hub (2018) also supports Zigbee 3.0 and Z-Wave Plus.


Local Processing Capabilities

Some functionalities can run locally with the SmartThings Hub. Some of the processing that has previously existed in the cloud, like for certain automations and device types, automatically occurs locally in the Hub. This means much faster response time, improved performance, and reduced latency. Certain automations driven by Zigbee or Z-Wave devices will no longer have to make that round trip from the device, to the Hub, up to the cloud, and back. What exactly does the Hub have under the hood? You’re looking at: 528 MHz ARM Cortex-A7, 256MB DDR RAM, and 4GB FLASH.


USB Port

To set the groundwork for future expansion, the Hub features a USB port.
