Automating your lights is a great introduction to the Internet of Things and your own smart home ecosystem. Leviton devices include excellent smart Z-Wave switches, dimmers, and plug-in modules that allow you to make your wall lights, plugged-in lights, and appliances remotely controllable and automatable, with the help of SmartThings. These devices are also Z-Wave repeaters and will extend the range of your Z-Wave network.
This article will tell you how to connect the following Leviton devices:
- Leviton Switch (DZS15-1LZ) (pictured above)
- Leviton Magnetic Low Voltage Dimmer (VRMX1-1LZ)
- Leviton Appliance Module (DZPA1-1LW)
- Leviton Plug-in Lamp Dimmer Module (DZPD3-1LW)
- Leviton Outlet (DZR15-1LZ)
- Leviton Universal Dimmer (DZMX1-1LZ)
- Leviton 15A Switch (VRS15-1LZ)
- Leviton 15A Split Duplex Receptacle (VRR15-1LZ)
- Leviton 3-Speed Fan Controller (VRF01-1LZ)
- Leviton 5A Incandescent Switch (VRS05-1LZ) (no neutral wire required)
- Leviton 600W Incandescent Dimmer (VRI06-1LZ) (no neutral wire required)
- Leviton 1000W Incandescent Dimmer (VRI10-1LZ) (no neutral wire required)
Z-Wave Plus models:
- Leviton Decora Smart Z-Wave 15 Amp Switch (DZ15S) (Z-Wave Plus)
- Leviton 1000W Dimmer (DZ1KD) (Z-Wave Plus)
- Leviton Decora Smart Z-Wave 600-Watt Dimmer (DZ6HD) (Z-Wave Plus)
Note: If you have a Leviton ZigBee device, follow these instructions for how to connect a Leviton ZigBee device. If you have the Leviton ZigBee Wireless Load Control Module (73A00-3ZB), follow these instructions here. Consult the documentation that came with your device if you’re unsure which communication protocol it uses (ZigBee or Z-Wave).

To connect the Leviton device in the SmartThings app
First, install the Leviton device according to its installation instructions.
Next, in the SmartThings mobile app:
- From the Dashboard, tap Add device
- Android: Tap Add Device Manually
- For outlets:
- Select Outlet
- Tap Leviton
- For switches:
- Select Switch/dimmer
- Tap Leviton
- If you have more than one SmartThings Hub connected, select the Location you would like to add the device to, then tap Done
- While the Hub searches:
- For outlets or plug-in modules, press the programming button once
- For in-wall switches and dimmers, press the push pad once
- For Z-Wave Plus in-wall models, hold the top push pad for 7 seconds until the LED blinks amber. Then press the top push pad once
- When the device is discovered, a message will appear that the device was successfully connected to your SmartThings Hub
- Tap Edit to rename the device
- When finished, tap Done
- Tap Done again to confirm
To reset the Leviton device
If the Leviton device was not discovered, you may need to reset, or “exclude,” the device before it can successfully connect with the SmartThings Hub. To do this, in the SmartThings mobile app:
- From the Dashboard, tap on the Devices tab
- Tap the Hub
- Tap the three dots in the top right
- Tap Z-Wave exclusion
- When prompted:
- For outlets or plug-in modules, press the programming button once
- For in-wall switches and dimmers, press the push pad once
- For Z-Wave Plus in-wall models, hold the top push pad for 7 seconds until the LED blinks amber. Then press the top push pad once
After the app indicates that the device was successfully removed from SmartThings, follow the first set of instructions above to connect the Leviton device.
To remove the Leviton device from SmartThings
If the Leviton device is connected but not operating as normal, you may need to remove the device and reconnect it with the SmartThings Hub.
To remove the device via the SmartThings app:
- From the Dashboard, tap on the Devices tab
- Tap the three dots in the top right
- Tap Edit
- Tap the red minus icon (-) next to the name of the device
- Confirm removal (this cannot be undone)
- When prompted, perform the exclusion procedure to remove the device from the mobile app and from the SmartThings Hub
Troubleshooting
- During connection, if the device’s locator LED is flashing amber while the Hub is searching, wait until the LED stops flashing/becomes solid, then press the push pad or programming button once to turn the device on
- The locator LED will turn OFF when the device pairs with the Hub
- If the locator LED turns solid red, there may be a communication error. Refer to the Troubleshooting section of the device’s instruction manual
To connect the Leviton device in the SmartThings Classic app
First, install the Leviton device according to its installation instructions.
Next, in the SmartThings Classic mobile app:
- Tap My Home
- Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
- The app will say Looking for devices…
- While the Hub searches:
- For outlets or plug-in modules, press the programming button once
- For in-wall switches and dimmers, press the push pad once
- For Z-Wave Plus in-wall models, hold the top push pad for 7 seconds until the LED blinks amber. Then press the top push pad once
- When the device is discovered, it will be listed at the top of the screen
- Tap the device to rename it and tap Done
- When finished, tap Save
- Tap Ok to confirm
To reset the Leviton device
If the Leviton device was not discovered, you may need to reset, or “exclude,” the device before it can successfully connect with the SmartThings Hub. To do this, in the SmartThings Classic mobile app:
- Tap the menu (Android) / More (iOS)
- Tap the Hub
- Tap Z-Wave Utilities
- Tap General Device Exclusion
- When prompted:
- For outlets or plug-in modules, press the programming button once
- For in-wall switches and dimmers, press the push pad once
- For Z-Wave Plus in-wall models, hold the top push pad for 7 seconds until the LED blinks amber. Then press the top push pad once
After the app indicates that the device was successfully removed from SmartThings, follow the first set of instructions above to connect the Leviton device.
To remove the Leviton device from SmartThings Classic
If the Leviton device is connected but not operating as normal, you may need to remove the device and reconnect it with the SmartThings Hub.
To remove the device via the SmartThings Classic app:
- Tap My Home
- Tap Things
- Select the device
- Tap the gear icon
- Tap Remove
- Confirm removal
- When prompted, perform the exclusion procedure to remove the device from the mobile app and from the SmartThings Hub
Troubleshooting
