First Alert Smoke Detector (ZSMOKE) and First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (ZCOMBO)

A smart home can also be a safe home. With the First Alert Smoke Detector (ZSMOKE) and First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (ZCOMBO) and SmartThings, you will be immediately notified at the first sign of smoke. The First Alert Smoke Detector is a Z-Wave device that emits a loud alarm when smoke is detected, and it will send an instant alert to your smartphone via SmartThings.

To connect the First Alert Smoke Detector (ZSMOKE) and First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (ZCOMBO) in the SmartThings app

First, slide the battery tray out of the smoke detector (on the top left side).

Insert the batteries (checking the correct orientation).

Then, in the SmartThings mobile app:

  1. From the Home screen, touch the Plus (+) icon and select Add device
  2. Select First Alert
  3. Choose a Hub for the device and touch Next
  4. Choose a Room for the device and touch Next
  5. While the Hub searches,
    1. Open the battery tray
    2. Hold the Test button while re-inserting the battery tray
    3. When the device beeps, release the button

 

To exclude the First Alert Smoke Detector (ZSMOKE) and First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (ZCOMBO)

If the First Alert Smoke Detector was not discovered, you may need to reset, or “exclude,” the device before it can successfully connect with the SmartThings Hub. To do this in the SmartThings mobile app:

  1. From the Home screen, touch Menu (Menu icon), and select Devices
  2. Touch the Hub and select More Options (More Options menu icon)
  3. Touch Z-Wave exclusion
  4. When prompted, do the following:
    1. Open the battery tray
    2. Hold the Test button while re-inserting the battery tray
    3. When the device beeps, release the button

After the app indicates that the device was successfully removed from SmartThings, follow the above instructions to connect the First Alert device.

 

To factory reset the First Alert Smoke Detector (ZSMOKE) and First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (ZCOMBO)

If excluding and removing the detector does not produce results, factory reset the device:

  1. Make sure the device is powered
  2. Press and hold the test button for 10+ seconds

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
  3. The app will say Looking for devices…
  4. While the Hub searches,
    1. Open the battery tray
    2. Hold the Test button while re-inserting the battery tray
    3. When the device beeps, release the button
  5. When the device is discovered, it will be listed at the top of the screen
  6. Tap the device to rename it and tap Done
  7. When finished, tap Save
  8. Tap Ok to confirm

 

To exclude the First Alert Smoke Detector (ZSMOKE) and First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (ZCOMBO)

  1. Tap the menu (Android) / More (iOS)
  2. Tap the Hub
  3. Tap Z-Wave Utilities
  4. Tap General Device Exclusion
  5. When prompted, do the following:
    1. Open the battery tray
    2. Hold the Test button while re-inserting the battery tray
    3. When the device beeps, release the button

After the app indicates that the device was successfully removed from SmartThings, follow the above instructions to connect the First Alert device.
