SmartThings Support

Amazon Alexa + SmartThings Scenes

With a simple voice command to Alexa, you can activate Scenes in the SmartThings app to instantly trigger lighting and thermostat actions throughout your smart home!

Currently, Alexa will only support Scenes containing thermostat (US only) and lighting devices. This means your existing Scenes may not work if they have an unsupported device. Unsupported devices include: door locks, garage door openers, security systems, security devices (such as sirens), cameras, and smart cooking appliances.

What is a SmartThings Scene?

Scenes allow you to control a group of devices with a single command. You can create a Scene in the SmartThings app and then use Alexa to trigger it.

With a Scene, you can define when it runs and under what conditions, and what devices it controls. SmartThings will remember all the actions you’ve personalized and perform them when you run the Scene, via the SmartThings app or when you give the command to Alexa.

How do I create the best voice experience for Scenes?

For the best voice experience, create a new Scene to use with Alexa. Here are some examples of lighting and thermostat only Scenes:

  • Bedtime - Turn off your 2 bedroom lights and turns down the thermostat to 65 degrees
  • Party Time - Turn off your boring recessed lights and turn on your fun, color LED lightstrips.

How do I set up Scenes to work with Amazon Alexa?

If you already have the Amazon Alexa connected with SmartThings then you’re nearly ready to use this functionality! Alexa should automatically discover your new Scenes or just say "Alexa, Discover devices.

If you haven’t connected Amazon Alexa with SmartThings yet, you can find the steps here! You can set up your Scenes to your preferences at any time in the mobile app.

How do I run my new Scenes with Amazon Alexa?

Once you’ve connected your voice supported Scene with Alexa, if you created any of the sample Scenes from above, simply say:

  • For Bedtime, “Alexa, turn on Bedtime.”
  • For Party Time, “Alexa, turn on Party time."

Alexa will respond with “Okay,” and run your new Scene with the power of your voice.

Can I use my existing Scenes with Alexa?

As long as your Scenes do not contain an unsupported device, they can be used with Alexa. However, any Scene with an unsupported device in it will not run. Alexa will be unable to see or run any Scenes that contain unsupported devices.

What devices are unsupported by Alexa?

Unsupported devices include door locks, garage door openers, security systems (such as SmartThings Home Monitor), security devices (such as sirens), cameras, and smart cooking appliances.

What happens if I add an unsupported device to a Scene that previously worked with Alexa?

If you add an unsupported device to a Scene that previously ran using Alexa, the Scene will no longer work. If you try to run it, Alexa will timeout as it will be unable to find that Scene. Removing the unsupported device will cause Alexa to rediscover the Scene.
