The Aeotec Door/Window Sensor is perfect for monitoring comings and goings. It's a magnetic contact sensor you can use to monitor the opening and closing of doors, windows, and cabinets. This Z-Wave device can also be triggered to turn on and off lights or alarms, using the magic of SmartThings.
This article will tell you how to connect the following Aeotec Door/Window Sensors with the SmartThings Hub:
- Aeotec Door/Window Sensor (DSB04100-ZWUS)
- Aeotec Door/Window Sensor Gen 5 (ZW120)*
- Aeotec Door/Window Sensor 6 (ZW112-A) (pictured above)
*Note: The Aeotec Door/Window Sensor Gen 5 is equivalent to the Aeotec Door/Window Sensor 2nd Edition or 2E (DSB29-ZWUS).
If you have the Aeotec Recessed Door Sensor Gen 5 (ZW089-A), follow these instructions.

In the SmartThings app:
- From the Home screen, touch the Plus (+) icon and select Add device
- Select Aeotec and touch Open/closed sensor
- Choose a Hub for the device and touch Next
- Choose a Room for the device and touch Next
- While the Hub searches, press the "Action" button once
To reset Aeotec Door/Window Sensors
If the Aeotec Door/Window Sensor was not detected, you may need to reset, or “exclude,” the device before it can successfully connect with the SmartThings Hub. To do this in the SmartThings app:
- From the Home screen, touch the menu (
), and select Devices
- Touch the Hub and select More Options (
)
- Touch Z-Wave utilities and select Z-Wave exclusion
- Press the "Action" button once
When the app indicates that the device was successfully removed from SmartThings, follow the instructions above to connect the Aeotec Door/Window Sensor.
To connect the Aeotec Door/Window Sensor in the SmartThings Classic app
In the SmartThings mobile app:
- Tap My Home
- Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
- The app will say Looking for devices…
- While the Hub searches, perform the inclusion process on the sensor:
- For the original Door/Window Sensor, press the security tamper switch on the back of the sensor once
- For the Door/Window Sensor Gen 5 and 6, press the button on the inside of the sensor once
- When the device is discovered, it will be listed at the top of the screen
- Tap the device to rename it and tap Done
- When finished, tap Save
- Tap Ok to confirm
To reset the Aeotec Door/Window Sensor
If the Aeotec Door/Window Sensor was not discovered, you may need to reset, or “exclude,” the device before it can successfully connect with the SmartThings Hub. To do this in the SmartThings mobile app:
- Tap the menu (Android) / More (iOS)
- Tap the Hub
- Tap Z-Wave Utilities
- Tap General Device Exclusion
- When prompted, perform the exclusion process on the sensor:
- For the original Door/Window Sensor, press the security tamper switch on the back of the sensor once
- For the Door/Window Sensor Gen 5 and 6, press the button on the inside of the sensor once
After the app indicates that the device was successfully removed from SmartThings, follow the first set of instructions above to connect the Aeotec Door/Window Sensor.
