SmartThings Support

What does “IFTTT” mean?

IFTTT is shorthand for “IfThis Then That.”

What is IFTTT?

IFTTT is a service that lets you connect other services, formerly called Channels, together. When an action happens with one service, IFTTT automatically triggers a separate action with another service.

In other words: “If this happens, then have that happen.”

For example: “If my SmartThings Motion Sensor detects motion, then turn on my Hue light.”

What are Services?

“Service” (formerly called “Channels”) is the term IFTTT uses to describe a third-party service or app. IFTTT currently supports over 300 Services.

SmartThings is a Service within IFTTT.

In the example, “If my SmartThings Motion Sensor detects motion, then turn on my Hue light,” IFTTT connects the SmartThings Service with the Hue Service.

What are IF Applets?

An “IF Applet” (formerly called “Recipes”)is the formula you use to combine two Services using a “Trigger” and an “Action.”

Our example of “If my SmartThings Motion Sensor detects motion, then turn on my Hue light” is an IF Applet.

The Trigger is the Motion Sensor detecting motion, and the Action is turning on the Hue light.

What are DO Applets?

A “DO Applet” (formerly called “Recipes”) acts as a virtual button to trigger a single action on command.

For example, a popular SmartThings DO Applet is: “Turn on a switch.”

How do I make an Applet?

Click New Applet and follow the instructions to set up your triggers and actions for your needs. You can also add Applets other users have created by searching or browsing through Discover and Search tabs.
