Set up and connect the SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor

The SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor is great for monitoring doors, windows, cabinets, or any off-limits area. With Automations, this sensor can trigger alerts, tell the lights to turn on and off, or set your thermostat based on the built-in temperature sensor.

Connect the SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor

In the SmartThings app:

  1. From the Home screen, touch the Plus (+) icon and select Add device
  2. Select SmartThings, touch Multipurpose sensor, and then SmartThings (IM6001-MPP)
  3. Choose a Hub for the device and touch Next
  4. Choose a Room for the device and touch Next
  5. While the Hub searches:
    1. Pull the “Remove when Connecting” tab found in the sensor
    2. Scan the code on the back of the device

 

Reset the SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor

If the SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor didn't connect to the Hub when you removed the pull-tab, reset and connect the device manually. To do this:

  1. Hold the recessed connect button for five (5) seconds
  2. Release the button when the LED starts blinking red
  3. The LED will blink red and green while attempting to connect
  4. Use the SmartThings app and steps detailed above to reconnect your Multipurpose Sensor.

 

Requires a SmartThings Hub or compatible device with SmartThings Hub functionality.

How to connect the SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor in the SmartThings Classic app

Follow the instructions below or consult the Multipurpose Sensor’s Quick-Start Guide at the bottom of this article.

In the SmartThings Classic mobile app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
  3. The app will say Looking for devices…
  4. While the Hub searches, move the Multipurpose Sensor within 15 feet of the Hub and pull the battery tab on the sensor
  5. When the device is discovered, it will be listed at the top of the screen
  6. Tap the device to rename it and tap Done
  7. When finished, tap Save
  8. Tap Ok to confirm

 

How to reset the SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor

If the SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor didn't connect to the Hub when you removed the pull-tab, reset and connect the device manually.

If you're unsure about which version of the SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor you own, click here.

First, move the Multipurpose Sensor within 15 feet of the Hub. Then, in the SmartThings Classic app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Under Things, tap Add a Thing at the bottom of your Things list
  3. The app will say Looking for devices…

Next, reset the sensor:

  1. Hold down the Connect button on the Multipurpose Sensor for 5 seconds. (If you're unable to locate the Connect button, find your model here)
  2. Release the button when the LED light starts blinking red
  3. Once the sensor has been reset, the LED will begin to blink green/red OR double blink blue, indicating that the sensor is attempting to connect

Then, back in the SmartThings Classic app:

  1. The Hub should automatically discover your device within a couple of minutes.
  2. Once the app shows a device has been found, follow the in-app steps to name and save the device

 

How to remove the Multipurpose Sensor from the SmartThings Hub

If the Multipurpose Sensor is not performing as expected, you may need to reset the device and/or remove and reconnect the device with the SmartThings Hub.

To remove the device via the SmartThings Classic app:

  1. Tap My Home
  2. Tap Things
  3. Select the Multipurpose Sensor
  4. Tap the gear icon
  5. Tap Remove
  6. Confirm removal (this cannot be undone)
