Zigbee OTA firmware updates

What are Zigbee OTA firmware updates?

They are updates for select Zigbee devices wherein manufacturers can improve their firmware and add features to products that are already in your home. These updates will happen wirelessly, or Over the Air (OTA).

Does my Hub support Zigbee OTA firmware updates?

All of the SmartThings Hubs support Zigee OTA firmware updates except for the original SmartThings Hub v1 and the NVIDIA SHIELD Hub.

Are Zigbee OTA firmware updates enabled automatically?

No. Currently, you must enable the updates through the SmartThings App.

  1. From the Home screen, touch Menu (Menu icon) > Devices
  2. Select your Hub
    • If you have the Samsung SmartThings Wifi or Samsung Connect Home, select SmartThings Hub > Manage SmartThings Hub
  3. Touch the refresh icon under Device firmware updates
  4. Touch Allow for all devices or Allow except lightbulbs

Some devices need to be turned off and on (or have the batteries removed and reinstalled) to accept available firmware updates. Others, like the SYLVANIA smart bulbs, require a manual prompt to check for available updates (see the steps below).

How do I check if there is an update available?

You can check in the IDE for both the current firmware version and if there is an update available. The SYLVANIA smart bulbs do not automatically check for updates and require these steps to check for and accept updates.

  1. Log in to
  2. Click My Locations
  3. Click List Devices
  4. Select the device
  5. Under Firmware, you will see Current Version and Target Version
If the Target Version is different than the Current Version, there is a firmware update available for that device
  6. You will also see the date and time the device Last Checked for an update
Click Check Now to have the device check again (required for SYLVANIA bulbs)

Remember that some devices need to be turned off and on (or have the batteries removed and reinstalled) in order to accept available firmware updates.

There will be no indicators in the mobile app regarding OTA updates, but you can find recent updates in the device event logs in the IDE by following the steps above and clicking List Events.

Can I update the firmware on my devices?

Some manufacturers have released firmware to add features and improve performance for devices that are already connected to your SmartThings Hub. These updates will happen wirelessly.

Why should I enable device firmware updates?

Firmware updates can improve the functionality of a device and fix bugs. These updates are non-intrusive and generally do not disrupt the day-to-day function of your devices.

If you choose not to enable Device firmware updates, you can still manually check for updates through the SmartThings IDE.

Which Hubs support device firmware updates?

All SmartThings Hubs support device Zigbee OTA firmware updates except for the original SmartThings Hub (2013) and SmartThings Link for NVIDIA SHIELD.

Are device firmware updates enabled automatically?

No. You can enable updates in the SmartThings mobile app by selecting the hub from your Device list and toggling device firmware updates to ON.

SmartThings provides an option to Allow except lightbulbs because some light bulbs may automatically turn on after an update. Once you enable Device firmware updates, the Hub will check devices for updates at least once every 24 hours.

If you see a device has an update available, but it has not yet been applied, wait 24 hours for the next firmware check. If the device still has not updated, try turning the device off & on or remove & reinstall the batteries.

How often will updates happen?

The frequency of updates varies by manufacturer and device. When updates are available, your Hub automatically sends the updates to your devices during its next check in.

How long do updates take?

The length of time an update requires will vary by device, size of the update, distance from the Hub, outside interference, and the number of simultaneous updates on the network. Most updates will take about five minutes, but some may take up to one hour.

Will my devices still work during the update?

Yes, devices will continue to function during an update. There may be a brief period where the device is offline or may need to reset its state when the firmware update is being applied. Note - some battery-powered devices may experience some energy drain due to the extra power required to apply a firmware update.
