SmartThings Support

Why is my SmartThings Tracker not updating my location accurately?

In the SmartThings app, a circle will appear around the estimated area of your SmartThings Tracker when you request its location from the app or when you send its location by pressing the Tracker's power button twice.

There may be slight variations to the estimated location of the Tracker, but you can rest assured that the circle in the SmartThings app is an accurate approximation of the Tracker's current location.

Variations in location accuracy

Since SmartThings Tracker uses cellular LTE data to send its location to the SmartThings Cloud, its estimated location may vary based on signal strength in the area. For example, if the Tracker is in a dense area during a busy time of day, the cellular signal may be weaker.

Depending on the signal strength and the network traffic in the area, it may take several seconds to several minutes for location updates to show in the SmartThings app.

Zone inaccuracy

If there are consistent issues with exit/entry Zone alerts or presence-based automations, there might be an issue with the size or location of the Zone. Try increasing the size of the Zone, and make sure that it's set to the correct location:

  1. In the SmartThings app, touch the Tracker's device card.
  2. Touch the three dots in the top right.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select Manage zones.
  5. Touch Edit for the Zone.
  6. Pinch to zoom the size of the Zone.
  7. Drag and move the circle to the correct location, enter an address manually, or touch the compass icon to use your phone's current location.
  8. Touch Save to confirm.
