What is SmartThings Video?

SmartThings Video is a service for the SmartThings Cam that offers different tiers of functions of camera based on a subscription plan.

 

Is there a service fee when using SmartThings Cam?

SmartThings Video is offered in two tiers of service: Basic Plan and Premium Plan.

How many cameras can I use?

On the Basic Plan, you can connect up to 4 cameras. On the Premium Plan, you can connect up to 8 cameras.

 

What do I need in order to use a SmartThings Cam?

To use a SmartThings Cam, you need a Samsung account, the SmartThings App (Available for Android 5.0 or later and iOS 10 or later), a modem or broadband connection, and the included power adapter.

 

How do I subscribe to SmartThings Video?

Can I use SmartThings Cam with non-Samsung mobile phones?

Yes, you can use SmartThings Cam with non-Samsung mobile phones. To use a SmartThings Cam, you must install the SmartThings app on your mobile phone.

The SmartThings app can be downloaded from Galaxy Apps, Google Play, and the App Store.

Android phones must be running Android 5.0 or later, and iPhones must be running on iOS 10 or later.

 

Where is the best place to install the camera?

The SmartThings Cam is designed to be indoors. Place the camera facing the desired location. Check your phone's live view screen to make sure everything is within view. To increase the field of view:

  1. Select the Camera from the Home Screen

  2. Touch More options (More Options icon)
  3. Touch Wide View

 

How can I place my camera on the ceiling or on the wall?

We recommend mounting the camera on a ceiling or wall for permanent installation.

  1. Remove the mounting plate from the stand by sliding it forward from the stand
  2. Hold the mounting plate at the desired location and mark the holes for two mounting holes
  3. Drill two pilot holes on the camera stand at the marked location
  4. Align two mounting holes on the camera stand with two pilot holes and then mount the plate on the wall surface with two provided screws
  5. Slide the camera stand onto the mounting plate until it clicks in place
  6. Insert the power cable into the hole of the stand, connect the cable o the camera, and plug the power adapter into the outlet
  7. Adjust the camera for better performance and fix it firmly

 

How do I set the camera up again after changing my router or Wi-Fi password?

If your Wi-F router or password has been changed, the SmartThings cam needs to be set up again.

 

How do I record with SmartThings Cam?

SmartThings Cam can record clips through both Smart Home Monitor and Automations.

To record intrusion events in SmartThings Home Monitor:

  1. Touch SmartThings Home Monitor from the Home screen
  2. Touch Set up under Security
  3. Set up Armed (away) sensors
  4. Set up Armed (stay) sensors
  5. Touch Set response
  6. Touch Cameras

After setting SmartThings Home Monitor to Armed (stay) or Armed (away), the selected cameras will record if an intrusion is detected.  

To set up Human motion as a trigger source, when selecting Armed sensors:

  1. Select the toggle next to Use all sensors when setting up Armed (away) or Armed (stay)
  2. Touch Motion detection type
  3. Touch Only human motion
  4. Select the desired motion sensors
  5. Select the desired open/close sensors
  6. Select the desired sound sensors 

To record as an action in an Automation:

  1. From the Home screen, touch the Plus icon (+)
  2. Touch Add automation
  3. Touch + Custom automation
  4. Add desired conditions and touch Next
  5. Touch the Plus icon (+) under Then
  6. Touch Control devices
  7. Select the cameras and touch Next
  8. Touch the camera again and select Record
  9. Touch Done, name the Automation, and touch OK

 

What do the lights on the SmartThings Cam mean?

The LED on the front of the camera will blink in certain colors to indicate its status.

  • Solid blue: Power on
  • Blinking blue: Starting up; 2-way Audio
  • Blinking amber: Ready for setup/ Setup in progress
  • Solid green: Ready to use
  • Blinking green: Recording
  • Blinks blue 3 times: Camera is factory resetting
  • Flashing blue/amber: Firmware update
  • Solid amber: Firmware update failure

 

How do I turn off the Camera?

Touch the power button on the top right of the device card on the Home screen, or toggle the on/off button above live streaming when viewing the camera details.

 

How many days can I see the recorded videos?

Recording storage depends on the type of subscription plan for SmartThings Video:

  • Basic plan: 24 hours
  • Premium plan: 30 days 

 

Does the Camera's software automatically update?

The camera will check for a Firmware update every 4 hours. If an update is available, it will automatically install the next time the camera is not actively recording.

 

Can anyone see my video clips without my permission?

No. Clips are fully protected with a 256 bit AES/TLS 1.2 with mutual authentication & TPM (Trusted Platform Module). Unless you share your Samsung account and password with others, no one can see your video clips without your permission.
