Your Location in the SmartThings app is the main launchpad for your connected Devices, Scenes, and Automations. You can create Locations for multiple homes and share access with your friends and family.
To switch between multiple Locations you own or are shared to, follow the steps below.
- Select Menu (☰)
- Choose the Arrow (^) next to your Location’s name
- Select the Location you want to switch to
Add a Location
You should already have a Location set up by default when you logged into the SmartThings app. If you need to set up a new Location, you can do so using these steps:
- Tap the Menu (☰)
- Choose the Arrow (^) next to your Location’s name
- Select Add Location
- Add details about your Location and Tap Done
Remove a Location
Note: Removing a location will restore any included hubs to factory settings. All device connections, Automations, Scenes, configurations, and SmartApps associated with the location will be permanently deleted. All devices connected to your hub will have to be reset or excluded before they can be reconnected.
To complete this process, follow these steps:
- From the Home Screen, tap More Options (⋮) in the top right corner
- Select Manage Location
- After reading the pop-up, select Remove to proceed
Geolocations
Setting up your geolocation location allows you to use location-based automations including sunset/sunrise and mobile presence. You should have set your geolocation while creating your Location but in case you need to add or edit it, follow these steps:
- From the Home Screen, tap More Options (⋮) in the top right corner
- Select Manage location and tap your Geolocation
- Enter your address or drag the pin to your location
- Pinch in and out or move the slider to control your geofence
- Note: The geofence determined whether you and your shared members have arrived (within the geofence) or left (outside the geofence)
Rooms
Rooms are the best way to group devices in the SmartThings app. You can use Rooms to separate your devices into distinct areas and more easily organize large lists of connected devices.
To view a Room, select it from the Home Screen or select the Menu (☰) and tap Rooms.
Anytime you add a new device, you will be prompted to Select a Room or Add a new Room.
You can also manually add a Room with these steps:
- From the Home Screen, Tap Add (+) and select Room
- Select a name for your Room or tap Custom to create your own
- Select your wallpaper and choose Save
- Tap Save
To update an existing Room with a new name, wallpaper, or devices, edit the Room, with these steps:
- From the Home Screen, select Menu (☰) and tap Rooms
- Select the desired Room and tap More Options (⋮)
- Tap Manage room to edit the following:
- Choose the Room name to edit the name
- Tap Wallpaper to change the background
- Select Bring devices from other rooms or Move devices to other room to organize your devices
Removing a Room in the SmartThings app will not delete the devices associated with that Room.
To remove Rooms in SmartThings, follow these steps:
- From the Home Screen, select Menu (☰) and tap Rooms
- Select the desired Room
- Select More Options (⋮) and tap Remove room
- Choose Remove to confirm
Location Modes

You can either change your Location mode with Automations or manually using the following steps.
- From the Home Screen, tap the More Options (⋮) in the top right corner
- Select Manage location
- Choose Location mode
- Tap the mode you want to change to
- You can rename modes by selecting More Options (⋮) and Edit name
Linking Places
Linked Places let you connect multiple geolocations together so you can trigger Automations whenever someone arrives or leaves.
Only users and shared members with Galaxy devices can utilize linked places.
To add a linked place, follow these steps:
- From the Home Screen, tap More Options (⋮) in the top right corner
- Select Manage location and choose Linked places
- Tap Add (+)
- Name your new linked place and set up its geofence
- Tap Save
You will now be able to create member location Automations using your linked places.
