SmartThings hubs act as the brain of your smart home - allowing you to add and control Zigbee, Z-Wave, and LAN-connected devices.
The SmartThings app is used to set up and control any SmartThings enabled hub you own.
Add your SmartThings Enabled Hub
Before adding your SmartThings enabled hub, ensure that the hub is powered on and ready to pair. If you are using a Samsung or SmartThings branded hub, you can find more specific pairing instructions here.
To add a SmartThings enabled hub, follow these steps:
- From the Favorites or Devices tab, tap Add (+) and select Add device
- Note: When you first open the app, a popup may appear prompting you to add your device, just Tap ADD NOW and skip steps 1 and 2.
- Select Brand and choose the hub manufacturer
- Choose your Hub and Tap Start
- Choose a Location for the device
- Choose a Room for the device and Tap Next
- If the Geolocation is not set, Tap the map to set the Geolocation
- Tap the bullseye icon to use your current location or move the location pin. Pinch in or out to adjust the size of the geofence
- Follow the in-app instructions to connect your hub
- Wait a few moments while your hub is connected
- When the hub is successfully added, Tap Done
Remove your SmartThings Enabled Hub
To completely reset your SmartThings configuration, you can factory reset your hub with the steps found below.
Note: Removing the hub will restore its factory settings. All device connections, Routines, Scenes, configurations, and Services associated with that hub will be permanently deleted. All devices connected to your hub will have to be reset or excluded before they can be reconnected.
- From the Favorites or Devices tab, tap and hold the desired hub
- Select Edit and tap Delete device
- Tap Delete to confirm
Control your SmartThings Enabled Hub
Most of the functions for your SmartThings enabled hub should not require any action on your part but there are a handful of hub settings that you may find helpful. These settings will control Zigbee and Z-Wave functions in your hub.
Zigbee Settings
To access the Zigbee settings of your SmartThings enabled hub, follow these steps:
- From the Favorites or Devices tab, choose your Hub
- If applicable, select SmartThings Hub and Manage SmartThings Hub
- Select the toggle next to the following settings to enable or disable them
- Secure mode - This improves the security of your network by preventing disconnected Zigbee devices from reconnecting to the hub automatically. If a Zigbee device becomes unresponsive, you will need to reset and re-add it.
- Device Firmware Updates - Enabling this feature allows for your hub to automatically update the firmware of your Zigbee devices if an update becomes available.
Z-Wave Settings
To access Z-Wave settings of your SmartThings enable hub, follow these steps:
- From the Favorites or Devices tab, choose your Hub
- If applicable, select SmartThings Hub and Manage SmartThings Hub
- Select More Options (⋮) and Tap Z-Wave utilities
- Z-Wave Exclusion - If you are having trouble adding a Z-Wave device or if your new device will not connect after several attempts, you may need to exclude the device. After putting the hub in Z-Wave exclusion mode, you will need to perform a physical confirmation on the Z-Wave device itself (usually a button press).
- Repair Z-Wave network - If your Z-Wave network is not routing optimally, you can initiate a Z-Wave network repair. This ensures your hub uses the best connections possible for your Z-Wave devices. Note: Avoid using your Z-Wave devices during a network repair until you receive the "Z-Wave network repair finished" message.
