SmartThings hubs act as the brain of your smart home - allowing you to add and control Zigbee, Z-Wave, and LAN-connected devices.
The SmartThings app is used to set up and control any SmartThings enabled hub you own.
Add your SmartThings Enabled Hub
Before adding your SmartThings enabled hub, ensure that the hub is powered on and ready to pair. If you are using a Samsung or SmartThings branded hub, you can find more specific pairing instructions here.
To add a SmartThings enabled hub, follow these steps:
- From the Devices tab, tap Add (+)
- Choose Scan QR Code to add a Hub with a QR Code
- Select Scan Nearby to search for nearby hubs in pairing mode
- Tap Add next to Samsung or Partner Devices to select a specific model or device
- Make sure the device is put into pairing mode according to the manufacturer's instructions
- Wait a few moments while your device is set up and tap Done once added
For 2015 SmartThings Hubs you will have to use the process below to onboard devices:
- From the Devices tab, tap Add (+)
- Tap Add next to Samsung Devices and select Smart Home Hub
- Choose "Add without QR Code" and "Can't find your device"
- Select the SmartThings Hub 2015 model
- Choose the Location and Room for the device
- Follow the steps on the screen to complete pairing
Remove your SmartThings Enabled Hub
To completely reset your SmartThings configuration, you can factory reset your hub with the steps found below.
Note: Removing the hub will restore its factory settings. All device connections, Routines, configurations, and Services associated with that hub will be permanently deleted. All devices connected to your hub will have to be reset or excluded before they can be reconnected.
- From the Favorites or Devices tab, tap and hold the desired hub
- Tap Remove
- Tap Remove on the prompt that appears to confirm
Control your SmartThings Enabled Hub
Most of the functions for your SmartThings enabled hub should not require any action on your part but there are a handful of hub settings that you may find helpful. These settings will control Zigbee and Z-Wave functions in your hub.
Zigbee Settings
To access the Zigbee settings of your SmartThings enabled hub, follow these steps:
- From the Favorites or Devices tab, choose your Hub
- If applicable, select SmartThings Hub and Manage SmartThings Hub
- Secure mode - This improves the security of your network by preventing disconnected Zigbee devices from reconnecting to the hub automatically. If a Zigbee device becomes unresponsive, you will need to reset and re-add it.
- Device Firmware Updates - Enabling this feature allows for your hub to automatically update the firmware of your Zigbee devices if an update becomes available.
Z-Wave Settings
To access Z-Wave settings of your SmartThings enable hub, follow these steps:
- From the Favorites or Devices tab, choose your Hub
- If applicable, select SmartThings Hub and Manage SmartThings Hub
- Z-Wave Exclusion - If you are having trouble adding a Z-Wave device or if your new device will not connect after several attempts, you may need to exclude the device. After putting the hub in Z-Wave exclusion mode, you will need to perform a physical confirmation on the Z-Wave device itself (usually a button press).
- Repair Z-Wave network - If your Z-Wave network is not routing optimally, you can initiate a Z-Wave network repair. This ensures your hub uses the best connections possible for your Z-Wave devices. Note: Avoid using your Z-Wave devices during a network repair until you receive the "Z-Wave network repair finished" message.
Replace your SmartThings Enabled Hub
If you need to replace your hub with another one for any reason, this can be done via the Hub Replace process in the SmartThings app. A minimum SmartThings app version of 1.8.09 for Android or 1.7.09 for iOS is required to start the Hub Replace process, so ensure your app is up to date before starting. The Hub Replace Process can be started with the steps below.
- In the same location as your existing hub, add the new hub that you would like to transfer your devices and local Routines to
- From the Favorites or Devices tab, choose your existing hub
- Select (⋮) More Options and tap Replace Hub
- Note: If you do not see the Replace Hub option your hub does not currently support the functionality
- On the next screen, tap the Replace this Hub button and follow the prompts to finish replacing your hub
After the process is complete, you may need to allow up to 20 minutes for all devices to return to an online and functional state
